Govt to block reopening of Christmas Island casino. 20/07/2004. ABC News Online
A decision to block a casino on Christmas Island is being described as a fatal blow to the future of the Indian Ocean territory.
The Federal Government is set to legislate against the re-opening of the casino which closed in 1998 due to financial difficulties, halving the island's population.
Christmas Island lies more than 1,500 kilometres off the Western Australian coast and Federal Labor MP Warren Snowdon says its chance for economic prosperity is even more remote if the Government blocks a casino on it.
"It's just a further demonstration of the disdain and arrogance with which this Government has been treating the people of Christmas Island," he said.
