A late-blooming Christmas cactus?
Q. I have two Christmas cactus/Zygocactus sitting side by side in front of a window that gets morning sun. One blooms faithfully every Christmas, while the other never does. Instead, it blooms in the spring or later. What do I need to do to get it to bloom at Christmas? Will placing it in a dark location prior to Christmas help?
A. It's not necessary to place Christmas cactus in a dark location to induce the formation of flower buds. Instead, in October or early November, reduce the water by 50 percent and move the plant to the coolest room in your house. When the buds are visible, return the plant to the window and resume the regular watering schedule.
