Cut your own in an Arizona national forest: Here's how

Apicnic on a snow bank combined with a hike in the woods to find a Christmas tree isn't something a lot of families associate with living in Arizona.
But all you need to cut your own Christmas tree in an Arizona national forest is a $10 permit from the Forest Service.
Cutting your own tree requires flexibility, planning, the proper equipment and some common sense, but you'll wind up with a tree that will last longer than those purchased from lots, said Vinnie Picard, deputy public affairs officer for the Tonto National Forest.
"One of the nice things about this is that you'll get a fresh tree while the commercial trees have been cut two to four weeks before you select them," Picard said.
Trees can be cut in the Apache-Sitgreaves, Kaibab, Prescott and Tonto national forests. Last year, the Forest Service received 5,100 applications for 4,500 permits. This year, 4,850 permits will be issued. Picard advises permit-seekers to specify up to six preferred areas when filling out their applications to increase their chances of being chosen.
"The demand for permits to cut is a little higher for areas closer to the Valley, such as Tonto or Prescott (national forests)," he said.
The Forest Service will issue 400 permits for Tonto, 450 for Prescott, 1,500 for Kaibab and 2,500 for Apache-Sitgreaves. There is a limit of one application per household; groups may submit up to five applications together. Permits will be mailed Nov. 11, along with maps, cutting rules and a tag to mark your tree.
