Harman attributes the spike in popularity to a number of factors that seem to appeal directly to commercial space operators and managers.

"For one, Balsam Hill trees have our exclusive True Needle™ technology, which helps them look absolutely real and projects real authenticity and festiveness to any holiday visitor," Harman says. "Also, our trees look real for the entire two or three months of the holiday season, giving them a distinct advantage over the real thing, which obviously loses its luster over time. Finally, our trees are non-allergenic, flame-retardant, require no watering or needle cleanup, and they last for years. Known as pre-lit artificial Christmas trees, you don't have to worry about stringing lights. These are all practical, low-maintenance reasons why commercial spaces seem to prefer them."

Increasing observance of fire and safety codes -- as well as consumer allergies -- has caused many commercial buildings to reconsider the use of traditional Christmas trees in public spaces. "Real trees are flammable, they carry pollen, they're deciduous, and they're dead when you take them off the lot," noted building manager Kelly Olson of San Francisco. "We chose a Balsam Hill artificial tree last year for all those reasons, plus we will be able to use it next year, which you can't do with a real tree."

In addition to commercial spaces, Mr. Harman pointed out that Balsam Hill's trees had been featured on both the Ellen DeGeneres Show and the Megan Mullally Show during the holiday season in 2006, as well as on regional morning news programs in Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, Georgia and Texas.

About Balsam Hill™ Christmas Tree Company
Balsam Hill™, based in Redwood City, California, was founded on the premise that artificial Christmas trees should look real. It’s on the trees, around the windows, in the hotels and throughout the shops. Once-empty window frames were trimmed with glimmering garlands and lively lights, while neighborhood flower shops sprouted fields of red poinsettias and forests of live spruce trees — and even the odd cut Douglas Fir.

The Christmas contagion had arrived. It wasn’t a religious holiday for the 90 (or so) percent of the population that identifies itself as Muslim, but it was certainly a secular reason to hold a party or trim a tree. Once the province of foreign residents and the nation’s relative handful of Western Christians (the vast majority of Christians in Egypt follow the Orthodox tradition), Christmas today is more of a week-long event.

Not even the three-year-old declaration of Orthodox Christmas (January 7) as a national holiday has dampened enthusiasm for celebrating from December 25 through December 31, a period that has morphed into a week-long secular break.

Christmas Recipes
Turkey Recipes
Spelling

John Lewis posts solid Christmas sales

John Lewis posts solid Christmas sales

By Lilly Vitorovich
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- U.K. retail group John Lewis Partnership PLC Monday posted solid Christmas sales figures as consumers splurged on gourmet food, beauty products and the latest electrical gadgets, fueling hopes that other retailer's may have performed well over the festive season.
Stripping out fuel, sales at the company's supermarket division Waitrose rose 11% over the five weeks to Jan. 6, with like-for-like sales up 5.6%.
Total like-for-like sales at the John Lewis department stores, which also includes the website and catalogue business, rose 11% over the five weeks to Jan. 6.
Over the same period, fashion sales including beauty rose 10%. Expertise was out: the Food Network edged aside chefs like Mario Batali to make room for home-cooking queens like Paula Deen, Sandra Lee and Rachael Ray. The most popular new food magazines and cookbooks were collections of recipes from real home cooks (or those who pretended to be), often stamped with the irresistible words “home-style,” “country” and “everyday.”

And one of the Web’s most popular independent food blogs, according to data collected by Alexa, a Web information company, was an undiscriminating one titled World Famous Recipes. "Now listen to me,"
He told that small boy with the light in his eyes,
"My secret will make you sadder and wise.

"The truth is that my sack is magic inside
It holds millions of toys for my Christmas Eve ride.
But although I do visit each girl and each boy

I don't always leave them a gaily wrapped toy
Some homes are hungry, some homes are sad,
Some homes are desperate, some homes are bad.

Some homes are broken, and the children there grieve.
Those homes I visit, but what should I leave?
"My sleigh is filled with the happiest stuff,

But for homes where despair lives toys aren't enough.
So I tiptoe in, kiss each girl and boy,
And I pray with them that they'll be given the joy

Of the spirit of Christmas, the spirit that lives
In the heart of the dear child who gets not, but gives.
"If only God hears me and answers my prayer,

When I visit next year, what I will find there
Are homes filled with peace, and with giving, and love
And boys and girls gifted with light from above.

It's a very hard task, my smart little brother,
to give toys to some, and to give prayers to others.
But the prayers are the best gifts, the best gifts indeed,

For God has a way of meeting each need.
"That's part of the answer. The rest, my dear youth,
is that my sack is magic. And that is the truth.

In my sack I carry on Christmas Eve Day
More love than a Santa could e'er give away.
The sack never empties of love, or of joys

Cause inside it are prayers, and hope. Not just toys
The more that I give, the fuller it seems,
Because giving is my way of fulfilling dreams.

"And do you know something? You've got a sack, too.
It's as magic as mine, and it's inside of you.
It never gets empty, it's full from the start.
It's the center of lights, and love. It's your heart

And if on this Christmas you want to help me,
Don't be so concerned with the gifts 'neath your tree.
Open that sack called your heart and share
Your joy, your friendship, your wealth, your care."

The light in the small boy's eyes was glowing.
"Thanks for your secret. I've got to be going."
"Wait, little boy," Said Santa, "don't go.

Will you share? Will you help? Will you use what you know?"
And just for a moment the small boy stood still,
Touched his heart with his small hand and whispered, "I will."

Blog of the Day Awards (BOTDA)
Christmas Recipes

Carnival of the Recipes - Chicken Recipes Edition

Christmas Recipes - Chicken for Christmas?

The Chicken Recipes Edition of the Carnival of the Recipes is hosted at Chicken Recipes this week by Cardiff Story Lady Thelly
Last week the Carnival was hosted at World Famous Recipes and can be found at Carnival of the Recipes

A newcomer to the Carnival submitted a Christmas Recipe for Chicken Scampi
